Melbourne A. Noel, 89, of Wheaton, a retired civil and mechanical engineer, died Saturday in Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield. For many years, Mr. Noel was the chief engineer of the Chicago Bureau of Sanitation, where he participated in the design and supervised construction of Chicago’s three large refuse incinerator plants. In World War II, Mr. Noel was a master sergeant in charge of a water purification unit in the Army’s 1262nd Combat Engineers Battalion, 99th Division. He participated in the invasion of Normandy in June 1944 and also fought in the Battle of the Bulge. An avid golfer, he was a former golf team captain at the Itasca Country Club, and he was a longtime member of the Midwest Society of Engineers. Survivors include two sons, Mel Jr. and John; a sister; and six grandchildren. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Monday in Williams-Kampp Funeral Home, 430 E. Roosevelt Rd., Wheaton. Mass will be said at 2 p.m. Tuesday in St. Petronille Church, 420 Glenwood Ave., Glen Ellyn.
