About 90 steelworkers continued their strike Monday against Thompson Steel Co. in Franklin Park. On Friday, Thompson members of the United Steel Workers soundly rejected a contract with Thompson, based in Canton, Mass. Russell Hern Jr., president of Local 773, which includes Thompson, said the sticking point is pension funding. Thompson proposed freezing the union’s defined benefit pension, which gives retirees a set annual payment based on age and years of service, Hern said. George Ryan, Thompson’s chairman and chief executive, said union negotiators had recommended passage of the contract, and “it’s really too early” to say what provision resulted in the rejection.
