The Plan Commission Tuesday night voted 6-1 to recommend that the zoning ordinance be amended to allow retail sales on the second floor of buildings that have approved sprinkler and fire alarm systems.
Barrington Fire Chief David Danley said this would allow retail uses on the second floor of three 100-year-old buildings of historic value downtown.
Plan Commission Chairman Greg Furda, who voted against the amendment, questioned whether it is good public policy. He said the three businesses that initially would be affected have been illegally operating second floor retail for a long time.
Danley said these businesses have been served notice that if this amendment does not pass, they will have to vacate the second floor or go out of business.
The Plan Commission’s recommendation goes to the Village Board for final approval.
