In 1996 Gov. Jim Edgar signed a bill that repealed the Retail Rate Law, which provided very expensive Illinois taxpayer subsidies for the incineration of waste. It was because of an unprecedented number of calls and letter sent by concerned citizens that this was accomplished.
The people in favor of using taxpayer monies for subsidizing incinerators have not given up. They have made 11 attempts in the last legislative session to reinstate these subsidies. We believe there are better uses for taxpayer dollars. Calls to state legislators are needed before the veto session begins on Oct. 16. We hope that all concerned citizens who care how their tax dollars are spent will take the time to call their state legislators and tell them that they do not want any of their tax dollars used to subsidize any incinerators.
