Gov. Tommy Thompson said Thursday he will propose legislation next year to restructure Wisconsin’s electric industry but likely would stop short of opening the market to competition.
“I think deregulation is going to go very slowly,” Thompson said.
The state Public Service Commission last year began a 32-step plan that in about four years would open the state’s electric industry to competition if each step is met and the Legislature approves.
Thompson will focus on immediate changes to meet Wisconsin’s short-term energy needs, said his chief of staff, John Matthews.
