More than 30 members of a security force were missing and believed dead or wounded in a remote area of southeastern Colombia after an attack by rebels or a right-wing paramilitary group.
A National Police spokesman said Friday “at least 30” police, soldiers and judicial officials were believed slain when Marxist-led Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia rebels ambushed their convoy in Meta province.
A member of the convoy who escaped with two colleagues said by telephone from San Carlos de Guaroa, the town nearest the site where the attack occurred, that he had made contact by cellular phone with survivors pinned down in the countryside.
He said the attack, in which the convoy was hit by grenades and rifle fire Friday, was staged by “guerrillas or paramilitaries.”
