American workers: Get ready for a meaner work environment: Students at Northwestern University’s Kellogg Graduate School of Management enthusiastically applauded mega-investor Sam Zell’s advice to “park any sentimental crap at the door if you want to succeed in business” and his labeling as “crap” the social responsibility of business (Business, Sept. 25).
Meanwhile, in Japan, young bureaucrats named Mongol warrior Genghis Khan as the type of person they felt would make the best supervisor (Main news, Sept. 26). On the heels of corporate downsizing, these examples may foretell the dawning of an even meaner work environment than the one that currently characterizes our impersonal business world.
