Sam Smith engages in an interesting bit of moral equivalence when he equates Michael Jordan’s skipping a White House visit “because he said he was on vacation with his family and it turned out he was gambling with a convicted drug dealer” with Marv Albert’s lying to his bosses at NBC that he was not an adulterous lecher who abused women while wearing panties and a garter belt.
Did Marv Albert receive “public ridicule far in excess of his crime?” Absolutely not. Count me as one of those Neanderthals who believe that adultery is a sin and brutalizing women is a crime. We seem to have accepted as a society the nonsense that as long as you do your job well, personal conduct is irrelevant. It is relevant.
Marv Albert should be given a chance to earn back our respect, but he should not be given a free pass. There is such a thing as right and wrong. And justice.
Morality? Yes! And it counts.
