Elizabeth Warren knows the toll that breast cancer can take. Five years after her diagnosis, and after having successfully battled the disease, she developed lymphedema.
The condition results from the removal of lymph nodes and results in chronic swelling in the arm and armpit.
Spurred by her own experience, Warren, 46, a fitness trainer and writer, has launched the Chicago-area’s first exercise program specifically designed for breast cancer survivors. Living Well: Physical Fitness After Breast Cancer helps women minimize lymphedema symptoms and gain strength. It’s offered twice a month at Highland Park Hospital.
Warren also has created a lymphedema support group that meets on the third Wednesday of each month from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Y-ME National Breast Cancer Organization offices, 212 W. Van Buren St.
Warren’s classes stress a whole-body approach to breast cancer recovery, offering an exercise program as well as tips on proper diet, stretching techniques and maintaining a balanced approach to life.
The sessions include stretching, light resistance training and easy-to-follow aerobic dance movements for cardiovascular fitness. There is also a relaxation session and an opportunity for discussion with other breast cancer survivors.
The cost: an $8 donation to the Highland Park Hospital Breast Cancer Center. Upcoming one-day sessions will be held Thursday, Oct. 21, Nov. 6 and Nov. 18 at Highland Park Hospital. For more information or to register call 773-743-5550.
