Robert L. Berger, 66, of Elmhurst, a chemical engineer who managed the research and development department of Continental Plastic Containers of Elk Grove Village, died Saturday in Elmhurst Memorial Hospital.
A native of Chicago, Mr. Berger was the manager of the department that developed materials and colors for plastic bottles at Continental Plastic, formerly called Continental Can, said Thomas Riley, a colleague.
Mr. Berger also made sure heavy metals were not present in plastic bottles and that the juice bottles the company produced met federal Food and Drug Administration standards. He worked at Continental from 1964 until his retirement in 1993. He was a consultant there until his death.
He had bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Purdue University and an MBA from the University of Chicago.
A 35-year resident of Elmhurst, Mr. Berger is survived by his wife, Margery; a son, Robert P.; two daughters, Catherine, and Peggy Dlabal; a brother; and two grandchildren.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday in Ahlgrim Funeral Home, 567 S. Spring Rd., Elmhurst.
