William “Nap” Trottier, 81, a former Dixieland jazz trumpeter in Chicago, died of pneumonia Sept. 27 at the Outagamie County Health Center in Appleton, Wis. Born in Norway, Mich., Mr. Trottier began playing trumpet as a teenager. He recorded with Jack Teagarden and Frank Gillis’ Dixie Five in the early 1940s. Mr. Trottier lived in Evanston for 35 years, gigging at the 11-11 and Jazz Limited Clubs in Chicago with such figures as Doc Cenardo and Miff Mole. In the 1960s, Mr. Trottier led his own band, the Velvet Swing, and recorded with Art Hodes in the 1970s. Mr. Trottier did not pursue only music. In the early 1950s, he owned a diner, The Star Cafe, in Escanaba, Mich. Survivors include his wife, Mary; a son, James; two daughters, Helene and Kathleen Gray; and a grandson. A memorial service will be held Oct. 18 in Norway, Mich.
