Autumn’s fashion crop is ripe with plums, cranberries and cherries–robust reds that add opulence to the clean lines of the season’s clothes and accessories.
“In minimalist fashions, color adds richness,” says Leatrice Eiseman, a color consultant and executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. Berry hues represent “a swing in the elegant direction in which color makes up for a simplicity of design.”
Thus a trouser suit looks lush in burgundy velvet and a suede loafer goes beyond basic in cranberry.
These ruby hues are richest in tactile fabrics such as brocade, velvet and textured knits, and add a dash of drama to fall’s charcoals, blacks and browns.
Plus, berry has a psychological advantage, Eiseman says.
“If you’re shy and you don’t want heads to swivel when you make an entrance, yet you want to make a great impression, (berry) has the power of red without being obvious.”
