Columbus Day on Monday is a federal holiday. The following public services are affected:

– Schools: Public schools in Chicago will be closed. Many suburban schools will be closed, as well. Check with local school officials.

– Government offices: All Chicago federal, state, county and city offices will be closed.

– Postal service: There will be no mail delivery.

– Courts: Federal, state and circuit courts will be closed.

– Banks, S&Ls: Most will be closed.

– Financial markets: The Chicago Mercantile Exchange and Chicago Board of Trade both will be open for regular trading, except for interest-rate futures.

– Parking: Chicago meters must be fed.

– Transit: The CTA, Metra and Pace will run on regular weekday schedules. Thirteen CTA bus lines that cross Dearborn Street downtown will be detoured for the Columbus Day Parade, which starts at 12:45 p.m. and runs for about an hour.

Buses that normally use Dearborn will be detoured north on State Street, while those entering the Loop from the West Side will run only to LaSalle Street or Clark Street before turning west again. For further information, call 836-7000.
