I love to put on nail polish a couple of times a week. It usually goes all over the skin around my nails because I slop it on. But that’s OK, cuz it’s the color that counts.

I use lots of the nail polishes from the girls in my school and my sisters. I put on coat after coat after coat so it’s thick and goopy. It is so fun just watching the colors glitter. Sometimes I even put two or three colors on each nail just to see what they end up looking like. Purples, greens and blues are my favorites.

Guess what? I’m a guy. I’m a 12-year-old male from Chicago, I’m a major jock and very decent at soccer and basketball, I have a girlfriend, and I listen to alternative rock. My father thinks I want to be like Dennis Rodman or Marilyn Manson, which is not true at all!!! I just think painting nails is cool and amusing, and any guy who dares to do it is brave.

In the beginning, I only got a few jokes from my friends, because most people thought it was cool. But my father is not satisfied about it. The first time he saw me wearing polish, he said: “I think it’s cool, but are you trying to attract attention or be a woman? When I was a kid, a man was a man and a woman was a woman. Men did not do girl things and women did not do men things.” I told him: “I am a kid living in the ’90s,” and he started a whole other conversation about that topic. So I just listened.

When I do get jokes about how nail polish is for girls only, I can handle it, because those are the people who have no style. Plus, polish makes life less boring.
