We are long-time residents of DuPage County and avid conservationists. We strongly support the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County’s open-space bond referendum on Nov. 4. We both have witnessed how open space adds to the quality of life in DuPage County.
The Forest Preserve District’s current open-space preservation program started in the 1960s. Throughout the last few decades, the district has been able to add significant parcels for the public to enjoy. The current proposal to add land is simply the conclusion of a long-term vision, the final piece of a plan started decades ago by people with vision who care about DuPage County and its future. The referendum will provide funding to create greenways, trails and wonderful recreational opportunities.
Additionally, the open space will help clean our air and water, create flood-control areas and help alleviate traffic congestion and urban sprawl.
We have seen how DuPage County has changed over the years. One thing has remained constant–open space has always been important in helping to keep our communities healthy and strong. It has also been important in keeping our real estate values among the top in the country. Our land is being developed at the rate of 3,000 acres per year. We need to act now while we can still make a difference.
