While visiting Chicago recently, my husband and I witnessed what seemed to be a make-believe drama in your Loop. We saw and then stood helplessly watching the aftermath as an out-of-control car drove into a crowd of pedestrians. Was it real? Bleeding bodies lay scattered on the street.

From the group of spectators a man, apparently a doctor, stepped up and took charge, directing a nurse and several others as they administered care to these critically injured people. One by one they attended to each of the victims until the ambulances arrived within just a few minutes. It was a scene that I’m sure will remain with us for some time–of a city that works, has broad shoulders and cares.
