Just cleansing is no longer enough. A barrage of body washes promising to pamper your skin and soothe your psyche are competing for the chance to fill your shower caddy. “You’re going to be in the shower anyway, why not use an aromatherapeutic product?” says Jill Freeman, marketing vice president for Freeman Cosmetics, makers of personal-care products, including body washes.

Evanston dermatologist Dr. Andrew Scheman says body washes are milder than bar soaps, and more concentrated. “A little goes a long way,” he says. “Just a dab on a loofah or bath puff will do it.”

From sophisticated scents to those designed to conjure the indulgence of a rich dessert, these combo cleansers aim to transform a practical daily ritual into an opportunity for skin softening and mood boosting.

Some dermatologists are skeptical. Though the products are less drying than traditional cleansers, Scheman says most skins still will need an extra layer of moisturizer after stepping out of the shower. Dry skin in particular will require additional hydration, especially as the weather turns more chilly and dry.
