Rex Richardson: Pandora’s Pocket (Igmod)
Though he’s now a man of two cities (Chicago and New York), trumpeter Rex Richardson seems to hold a particular affinity for the local scene, as his newest recording attests. Performing with such formidable Chicago figures as singer Kurt Elling, drummer Paul Wertico and trombonist Paul McKee, Richardson offers music that is consistently aggressive, self-assured and, often, technically brilliant. Much of the playing is in a hard-bop manner, with a few expansive ballads by way of contrast. In any setting, though, Richardson’s trumpet work proves clarion in tone, nimble in technique and perpetually creative in its improvised solos.
