Bert Adolph Johnson, 78, a World War II veteran and a carpenter, died Thursday in his daughter’s home in Trevor, Wis. Mr. Johnson lived almost his entire life in the Morgan Park and Mt. Greenwood neighborhoods of Chicago’s Southwest Side. He fought in Germany for the Army in World War II, said his daughter, Peggy Valentinas, and was twice wounded, receiving a Purple Heart. “He told us a few stories about the war but it was also a sad time for him,” said his daughter. Upon his return from the war Mr. Johnson worked as a carpenter, building homes and then taking a job with Jewel Foods Stores helping construct grocery stores, Valentinas said. After his retirement age 62, Mr. Johnson continued his work in carpentry, doing projects for family and friends. He is also survived by three sons, Gary, Dennis and Charles; five grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the Edgar Funeral Home, 10900 S. Cicero Ave., Oak Lawn.
