In my political career, which began by campaigning door-to-door for President John F. Kennedy in 1960, I have met many honorable and talented men and women devoted to public service–Republicans and Democrats.
One of those for whom I have great respect and admiration is Vice President Al Gore, a person of intelligence, honesty and fairness.
It pains me to see the partisan political attacks on him for his fundraising efforts–efforts that were legally permissible and no different than those made by former President Ronald Reagan.
I am disgusted by those who would smear the character of such a fine person in such a blatant political attack. Vice President Gore is making a difference for the American people, working with President Clinton to help our families and build a brighter future.
I think it is time the partisans in Washington put aside politics and got serious about passing real campaign finance reform. The integrity of our system of government is at stake.
