The Waukegan Development Commission has voted to delay until next month approval of a parking variance requested by a Florida-based developer to build a self-storage warehouse at 35595 Green Bay Rd.

Mike Carter Construction Inc., of Bradenton, Fla., asked the commission to reduce the number of parking spaces required for a proposed 128,000-square-foot self-storage warehouse from 92 to 24, noting the city’s zoning ordinance specifies parking requirements for commercial warehouses and not for self-storage facilities.

Commercial warehouses need parking for the daily flow of deliveries and shipments and for the dozens of employees who work at the facility, a company representative said at a commission meeting last week.

Self-storage warehouses never have more than two employees on-site and generate about eight trips per hour, mostly by people using storage units, the representative said.

Commission members said they wanted to visit a similar facility in Mundelein before approving the parking variance.
