I cannot be the only person annoyed by the latest trend in broadcast news reporting, the use of the present tense to discuss all incidents. For example, “An elderly woman is shot to death” instead of “was shot to death” and “A young boy is hit by a car” instead of “was hit by a car.” What is it that made the local stations switch to this ridiculous use of the present tense for past events?

Worse yet, they seem to have difficulty following their new “trend” and often go back and forth during a newscast. Please, local stations, go back to reporting past events with the use of the past tense!
