The government has promised to help the Catholic minority recover nearly 2,000 churches seized during 40 years of communist rule, a Catholic cleric said Monday.
The pledge was made Sunday, when thousands of Romania’s so-called “Greek Catholics” attended the reburial of their church’s founder, Samuel Micu Klein, whose body was returned to the city of Blaj in August after more than 300 years in Rome.
The church’s properties were confiscated and turned over to Orthodox parishes by the communists.
