Former Boston Celtics guard and assistant coach Dennis Johnson was arrested Monday at his home in Orlando and charged with aggravated assault on his wife, police said. “Apparently he had an argument with his wife. He grabbed her by the throat and held a kitchen knife to her,” said Cmdr. Steve Jones of the Orange County Sheriff’s Office. Johnson, 43, also was charged with domestic violence and was being held at the Orange County Corrections Center. His wife was not injured.
– The Cleveland Cavaliers traded Sherman Douglas to Denver for another guard, Greg Graham. The trade also will provide the Cavs with a second-round draft pick in 2000 and other undisclosed considerations. Douglas was obtained from Milwaukee last month in the Shawn Kemp trade that also involved Seattle.
Hockey: The chauffeur of the limousine that crashed while carrying a party of Detroit Red Wings on June 13 pleaded guilty to driving with a suspended license. Richard Gnida entered the plea before 48th District Judge Kimberly F. Small, said court clerk Ann-Margaret Wesley. Sentencing was set for Nov. 3. The charge carries a penalty of up to a year in prison. Defenseman Vladimir Konstantinov and team masseur Sergei Mnatsakanov, the most seriously injured in the accident, remain in a Royal Oak, Mich., hospital, where they are listed in good condition.
Pro football: Detroit Lions safety Harry Colon was urged by team physicians to retire after X-rays disclosed a congenital problem in his neck. Colon, a seven-year veteran, was injured in Sunday’s 26-20 overtime loss to the New York Giants. Kent Falb, the Lions’ trainer, said Colon has a narrowing of the spinal canal.
Tennis: Andre Agassi, the former world No. 1 who has fallen to No. 102 in the rankings, lost 6-4, 6-4 to Todd Martin in the first round of the Eurocard Open in Stuttgart, Germany.
Baseball: Former San Francisco Giants pitcher John Montefusco, charged last week with beating and raping his ex-wife, remained jailed Monday, unable to raise $6,000 bail. If convicted, Montefusco could face up to 20 years in prison.
