As Cubs fans contrast their near-century of futility with the success of the Florida Marlins, some bold action is called for.

At various times, the Cubs have changed ownership, switched managers, tried to build a farm team or even buy the necessary talent through free agency. All have been dirt.

The Tribune Company would do well to emulate the Marlins in some untried way: The only hope to shed the loser image is to shed the cute little nickname and rename the team after some sort of fish.

Since the Cubs have been bottom-feeding in their division for so long, there is an obvious suggestion: The Chicago Carp can hook a new generation of fans and reel in a pennant for the North Side before the millennium.
