There was no speed limit on the road at Black Rock Desert in Gerlach, Nev., Wednesday. But there was a speed minimum: 633.46 m.p.h. — the land speed record.

A sleek, black Thrust SCC car screamed across the desert at 766.609 m.p.h., breaking the land speed record.

“It wasn’t all that difficult, really,” said driver Andy Green, a pilot in Britain’s Royal Air Force.

The car broke the sound barrier, which was calculated at 748.111 m.p.h. Wednesday (the speed of sound varies according to weather and altitude).

The Thrust is a massive vehicle, measuring 54 feet long, 12 feet wide and weighing a whopping 10.2 tons. It’s powered by two 110,000-horsepower Rolls-Royce engines (that’s roughly equivalent to 1,000 Ford Escorts!).
