Robert McCarthy, 78, an offset plate-maker and pressman at Press Publications for a little more than 40 years, died Sunday in his Elmhurst home. Born in Oak Park and raised in Elmhurst, Mr. McCarthy initially began working for Press Publications before entering the Army in July 1943. After training at Ft. Ord, Calif., he was stationed in the Aleutians and then Hawaii before being shipped to the Pacific, according to his wife, Nancy. In the Army, Mr. McCarthy saw action in several campaigns, including the Marshall Islands, Eniwetok Atoll, Leyte in the Philippines and Okinawa. He had enough credits to come home in October 1945 and did not have to be part of the occupation forces in Japan. He returned to Press Publications in 1945 and worked there until his retirement in 1983. Other survivors include three daughters, Mary Pat, Margaret Walker and Elizabeth Hoschet; two sons, James and John; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A memorial-visitation will be from 2 p.m. Tuesday until the 8:45 p.m. prayer service in Ahlgrim Funeral Home, 567 S. Spring Rd., Elmhurst.
