The McHenry County Defenders are inviting the public to learn about one of northern Illinois’ most important streams–McHenry County’s own Nippersink Creek.

Wayne Schennum, natural resources manager for the McHenry County Conservation District, plans to discuss the stream and the many plants and animals that live in it or near it at 7 p.m. Oct. 30 at Nippersink Public Library, 5418 Hill Rd., Richmond.

The Defenders, a local environmental group, are sponsoring Schennum’s talk. Nippersink Creek drains more than 200,000 acres, mostly farms and pastures in extreme southern Wisconsin and McHenry County, before emptying into the Fox River near Fox Lake. The towns of Genoa City, Wis.; Alden, Greenwood, Hebron, Richmond, Spring Grove, Wonder Lake and part of Woodstock lie within its drainage basin.

“The Nippersink Creek watershed is home to an amazing array of plant and animal life,” said Jerry Paulson, chairman of the Defenders’ Water Resources Protection Committee.
