Chicken continues to be the darling of economic cooks everywhere. Generally, it’s cheaper to buy whole chickens and cut them up yourself-but always check prices; the difference may not be significant enough to make up for the convenience of already cut-up parts. A recent trip to the supermarket found whole fryers selling for $1 a pound; cut-up chickens ranged from $1.20 per pound for drumsticks to $2.60 a pound for split breasts.
