General Binding Corp. reported third-quarter profits rose 16 percent, to $6.9 million, or 44 cents per share, from $5.9 million, or 37 cents per share, in the year-earlier period.

The Northbrook-based manufacturer of book binding and other equipment said revenue leapt almost 48 percent, to $196.6 million from $132.9 million.

For the nine months, profits rose 13 percent, to $20.8 million, or $1.32 per share, from $18.5 million, or $1.17 per share, in the 1996 period. Revenues jumped 43 percent, to $564.5 million from $394.7 million.
