George W. Sheffer, 71, an electrician and World War II veteran, died Monday in his Lombard home. Among the buildings Mr. Sheffer worked on during his 50 years as an electrician were the Rosemont Horizon and the McCormick Place. A Chicago native, Mr. Sheffer enlisted in the Navy in 1944. He was a coxswain and a gunner on the USS Tuscaloosa, the flagship of the Normandy invasion. Mr. Sheffer also saw action in the invasions of Guadalcanal and the Philippines. He earned four Bronze Star medals. A member of Local 134 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers for more then 50 years, Mr. Sheffer was a 42-year resident of Lombard. Survivors include his wife, Adelaide M.; four sons, George, Edward, James and Thomas; two daughters, Susan and Mary Lou; his mother, Rose; a brother; a sister; and eight grandchildren. Services will begin with a 9:30 a.m. prayer service Thursday in Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St., Lombard, and continue with a 10 a.m. mass in St. Pius X Catholic Church, Madison Street and Westmore Avenue, Lombard.
