Business and labor leaders called at a legislative hearing for tighter restrictions on the state’s prison work programs.
“I come here to underscore the amount of concerns and fear and anxiety that I get from working people all over about the real fear of job loss,” said Phil Neuenfeldt, secretary-treasurer of the Wisconsin AFL-CIO.
“If you start a prison industry today, and a year or two years down the road the economy has a downturn, where’s the downsizing going to take place?” he asked.
Sen. Rodney Moen (D-Whitehall) said a bill he introduced would forbid a business from hiring inmates if local skilled workers are available.
