In this day of political correctness, I am having trouble understanding the Tribune’s policy regarding ethnicity.
I understand your dropping the tradition of running John T. McCutcheon’s historical, whimsical and wonderful “Injun Summer” apparently in fear of offending the “Injuns” of 1907. I now also understand your sly new method of ethnic slur by implication.
In the Tribune’s story concerning Ald. Patrick Huels (Oct. 19), the reporters refer to Huel’s alleged “behind the scenes financial hanky-panky” and then state: “Although German-American by birth, Huels was Irish by disposition.”
I assume that the Tribune will recommend to the U.S. Census Bureau that from now on it include an additional question to that of national origin, namely: “Ethnic Disposition.” Maybe, in a true sense of fairness, the Tribune could list the ethnic disposition of all its reporters and editors immediately after the byline.
