John “Jack” S. Cresser, 63, a Korean War veteran and substance-abuse counselor, died Tuesday in Edgewater Medical Center. Mr. Cresser was born in Jamaica Plain, Mass., and moved to Chicago in 1968, where he worked as a bartender and a machinist before becoming a substance-abuse counselor with Lutheran Social Services in Chicago. He served in the Marines during the Korean War. Survivors include his fiance, Cordelia Tomaka; a brother; and a sister. Mass will be said at 10 a.m. Monday in St. Ita Catholic Church, 1220 W. Catalpa Ave., Chicago.
