So Gov. Jim Edgar believes the Rolando Cruz case and other death penalty errors “proves the justice system works as it should,” according to a spokesman (Metro, Oct. 17).
Let me get this straight: At least nine innocent persons languish on death row for a decade or more before being exonerated; others remain there while the appeal process (which some would curtail) moves along; in a worst case, we may actually execute innocent people.
That’s the system working as it should? The governor’s vision of the justice system working as it should chills me. As long as humans are given the legal authority to decide when a life is to end, mistakes will be made.
