Andrew Balis, 84, of Wheaton, a retired finish carpenter, died Monday in his home. Mr. Balis built cabinets, installed trim and did other finish carpentry work for various contractors until his retirement in 1965. He served in the Navy aboard the USS Saratoga during World War II. “He liked to fish and read,” said his daughter Joan Jevne. “I guess you would call him a self-taught intellectual. He liked to talk about politics at the dinner table, and when we were kids, he gave us money if we memorized poems. I remember he gave me money for memorizing Kipling and Confucius.” He is also survived by two other daughters, Carol Bobis and Diane Henderson; two sons, Andrew and William; 10 grandchildren; and a sister. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Williams-Kampp Funeral Home, 430 E. Roosevelt Rd., Wheaton. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the funeral home.
