What is wrong with this picture?

We all recognize that two of the worst problems experienced by the black community are high unemployment and an educational system that is less than effective. A reasonable person would assume that every responsible adult in the black community would work hard to improve employment and educational opportunities for young black men and women. That just makes sense.

Along comes Minister Louis Farrakhan with a message supposedly intended to benefit this community. What is it? Stay home from work and cut class (Main news, Oct. 13)! Let everyone at school and at work know that you can and will walk away from your responsibilities when Minister Farrakhan tells you to.

Can anyone explain how this helps anything? Will an employer promote an employee who walks off the job for no good reason? Will a teacher work overtime to help a student who simply disappears when he feels like it?

When it comes to helping the community, you may as well tell the young girls to get pregnant and tell the young men to go out and sell crack. His advice to stay home from work and cut class could not be more wrong.
