Cincinnati Bengals safety Tremain Mack was released from jail Thursday pending an appeal of his 30-day sentence for drunk driving.
Mack will enter a substance-abuse program so the NFL can assess his drinking problem.
“My understanding is he’s ready to go immediately into the program and do whatever they tell him to do,” lawyer Dan Hannon said. “When the in-patient portion is completed, he’ll return to the team and go from there.”
The NFL may fine Mack up to $20,000 or suspend him. Hammond said no decisions have been made on his punishment.
Mack, a fourth-round draft choice out of Miami, had a blood-alcohol level of .18–nearly twice Ohio’s legal limit–when he was stopped for speeding early Saturday in neighboring Clermont County. He was driving under a license suspended because of two pending DUIs in his home state of Texas.
