Hollinger International Inc. reported third-quarter profits of $5.6 million, or 5 cents per share, compared with a loss of $4 million, or 4 cents per share, a year earlier.
The Chicago-based owner of the Chicago Sun-Times and 165 other daily newspapers in the United States, Canada, Britain and Israel said revenues increased 6 percent, to $523.7 million from $495.2 million. The company said revenues from its Chicago newspaper group rose nearly 1 percent, to $82.4 million.
For the nine months, Hollinger said its profits leapt to $89.2 million, or 78 cents per share, from $2.3 million, or 1 cent per share, in the 1996 period. Revenues increased 6 percent, to $1.6 billion from $1.51 billion.
– Gaylord Container Corp. reported a fiscal fourth-quarter loss of $26.2 million, or 49 cents per share, compared with a loss of $9.2 million, or 17 cents per share, a year earlier.
The Deerfield-based paper manufacturer said revenues in the quarter, which ended Sept. 30, dropped 19 percent, to $181.9 million from $223.4 million.
For the year, Gaylord reported a loss of $82 million, or $1.55 per share, compared with profits of $8.6 million, or 16 cents per share, in the 1996 fiscal year. Excluding an extraordinary loss from early debt retirement, the per-share loss was $1.40.
