Dee Dee Bridgewater: Dear Ella (Verve)
There has been no shortage of divas recording tributes to Ella Fitzgerald, yet few have shown the vocal technique or interpretive savvy of Dee Dee Bridgewater. Beyond the virtuosity of her scat singing and the sensuality of her sound, Bridgewater evokes itzgerald’s legacy in the buoyant and airborne qualities of her versions of “A-Tisket, A-Tasket,” “Cotton Tail,” “Mack the Knife” and other Fitzgerald standards. Yet this is no mere imitation, for Bridgewater brings her own coy phrasings and dramatic flair to this repertoire, sung with big band, orchestra, trio and other instrumental combinations. By any measure, a tour de force.
