House Minority Leader Lee A. Daniels seems to have a serious blind spot when it comes to the issue of public school funding. Mr. Daniels has repeatedly insisted that money is not the answer to better schools. But if money is not the answer, then why is it that so much more money is spent on the public school systems in the wealthy Republican districts?
At any rate, the state legislature failed to respond to Gov. Jim Edgar’s request for additional funding. This was largely due to the efforts of Mr. Daniels and other state legislators.
Although spending more state money on education holds the best promise for property-tax relief and better schools, every taxpayer would love to get more for his or her money. And many of Mr. Daniels suggestions concerning public education make tremendous sense.
But Mr. Daniels is singing the same old song used to prevent the state from maintaining its contribution. Perhaps Mr. Daniels and other state legislators will reconsider what they truly believe is best for the schools?
