Your Nov. 2 article “King Richard’s buried treasure” provided an interesting view of how the political system works in Chicago. Unfortunately, for the taxpayers, your paper did not provide a solution or even offer plausible suggestions to curb practices of this autocratic system.
As a minority Republican commissioner for the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District, I believe taxpayers deserve a more detailed review of local government.
If the Tribune is trying to act as a catalyst for changing Illinois politics, then it should assume the responsibility for educating voters. You should educate them on how they can improve the system by learning more about govern-ment, getting involved and having a say in the manage-ment of tax dollars. You can do this by devoting a portion of the Metro section– print and on-line–to monitoring issues, displaying votes of elected officials and analyzing city, county and state budgets.
This information is critical to ensure proper checks and balances in our democratic process. Also, officials will rise to the higher standards and integrity demanded by citizens and taxpayers.
