With enrollment at a high point, the time has come to consider operating the elementary and junior high schools on different schedules to maximize safety and minimize traffic on the school campus site, Supt. Roger Reardon told the school board recently.

The number of pupils enrolled in Mokena Elementary School District 159 exceeds 2,000 this year, Reardon said last week.

With 2,019 pupils enrolled in Mokena Elementary School and Mokena Junior High School, the average class size ranges from a high of 28 pupils in 5th grade to a low of 22 in kindergarten.

Different operating schedules would shorten dismissal times, as well as bus trips, and would free more bus room for junior high school pupils, he said.

He suggested surveying parents to get their reaction before taking action.
