Architect Patrick Liu told District 201-U board members that construction on the $4.8 million Crete-Monee Middle School project would be delayed another six months.
Over the past several months, Liu had said the opening date would be mid-January.
Originally, the school, with its existing building and new structure, was scheduled to open by the August 1997 school year.
“This has been a Catch-22 project,” Liu said. “I feel the August deadline was too ambitious on my part. We did not anticipate all the major problems that came about from a 20-year-old building. We were wrong on our projections.”
Major work remains to be done in the cafeteria, music room, gym and theater. That work is not expected to be completed until the spring.
