The plane crash that killed singer John Denver last month might have occurred because the aircraft he was piloting ran out of gas, the National Transportation Safety Board said Wednesday.

The board’s Matt Furman said in a statement that lack of fuel is one of the possible causes being considered and called a report on KRON-TV “inaccurate.” The San Francisco station quoted a safety board investigator as saying that the 53-year-old singer’s experimental plane plunged into Monterey Bay because both fuel tanks were empty. “The possible fuel loss is only one of many areas of investigation,”, the statement said.

A report on the accident is expected next year.
