Jungle birds chirped and misty fog swirled as guests arrived at the Field Museum to enjoy its black-tie benefit, “Amazonia: A Night in the Rain Forest.”

Friday night’s fete at the Field was the handiwork of talented chairperson Donna LaPietra, along with members of the museum’s Women’s Board who planned the event in just six weeks. One of the perks of the evening: Curious folks were able to check out portions of the skeleton of Sue (the largest and most complete Tyrannosaurus rex so far discovered).

The rainforest theme was carried out in the food and decor. A Brazilian buffet was served during the cocktail hour, with such savories as hearts of palm salad and a variety of meat skewers. A thunder clap and flashing lights signalled dinner, which was served under mosquito netting on tables draped in jungle-print cloths. Chilean sea bass began the meal, followed by beef tenderloin and coconut flan.

After dinner, a guest magician placed Field President John McCarter’s head in a guillotine. Bill Kurtis emceed the evening, and was featured in a video with other board members.

Guests ended the evening by dancing on a “lily pad” dance floor to the music of the Ken Arlen Orchestra.

Organizers expected to raise about $150,000 from the evening. Tickets were $300 per person.

– Beautiful models showing off gorgeous gowns by Escada Couture were the highlight of the Fashion Group International of Chicago’s 12th annual gala held Nov. 7. This year the group honored the chairman and founder of Escada, Wolfgang Ley, who appeared via videotape to give thanks..

Escada’s vice-chairman Christopher Smith showed in person to accept the award.

About 300 business and fashion leaders filled the event, held at the Four Seasons Hotel. Included in the night’s festivities was a live auction featuring out-of-this-world vacations to Brazil, Germany and Argentina.
