The Tribune demeaned itself by publishing the fanatical, bigoted and irrational ramblings found in Cal Thomas’ column “Redefining moral law, an evolutionary experience” (Op-Ed, Nov. 12).

The Tribune would certainly not publish a column suggesting that the Holocaust resulted from the Jews’ violation of God’s standards. It is shocking then that the Tribune would print Thomas’ suggestion that AIDS and other venereal diseases are the result of violations of the standards of God.

Thomas also makes the irrational suggestion that morality requires a man to enter a union with a woman. If it is truly a moral requirement for all men to seek out a woman in order to protect the future of the human race, one wonders how Thomas would justify a Catholic priest’s abstinence.

It is also impossible to justify Thomas’ claim that homosexuality is a lifestyle that people can “leave.” Thomas fails to address the overwhelming evidence that suggests his view of homosexuality is fundamentally mistaken.

Cal Thomas is entitled to express himself, but his poorly reasoned, prejudiced and unsubstantiated ideas about homosexuality are more appropriately expressed in a right-wing newsletter, not the Chicago Tribune.
