Your article “Welfare reform slamming shut door to college” (Page 1, Nov. 9) is an affront to millions of Americans who have gotten a college degree without having “to go on welfare.” This is precisely why welfare reform is needed because welfare encourages people to escape the responsibility for their actions (i.e., dropping out of school, having illegitimate children, not looking for work, etc.) by supporting them and their children indefinitely.

Also, what is the graduation rate for welfare recipients? Are they there to learn or simply to avoid looking for work? We are rapidly becoming a nation of people who reject taking any responsibility for their actions. Maybe we should have universal military training in this country.
