Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

This is in reply to Shannon McDonald’s letter advising us suburbanites to take Metra trains to town to enjoy the arts. I do this regularly for Chicago Symphony concerts, but I go on Friday afternoons so as not to have to dash for one train home or wait an hour or two (three on Sunday) for the next one.

In any case, one has to get to the station. Then the train ride is a little more than 40 minutes long, and you still have to walk blocks to your car. All in all, it takes rather more than twice as long to get home by train. So let’s not be quite so superior when suburbanites complain about the high cost of parking.

I went to a special concert at Orchestra Hall a couple of weeks ago. I drove because of being too dressed up to walk very far and paid $16 to park less than four hours. No wonder many people out here prefer to go to arts events close to home.
