Decorative pomegranates turn up in fall, just in time for the holidays. This ancient fruit represents fertility, hope and prosperity. They’re labor-intensive, with luscious, sweet-tart seeds embedded in the bitter pulp, but they’re worth the hunt. (Immersing sections in a bowl of lukewarm water is an easier and tidier way to remove the seeds.) At market, buy plump fruit that are heavy for their size and have skin that’s bright to deep red. They will keep for a few days at room temperature, and several weeks in the refrigerator.
